The tale of the tape

Eddie has
a dream.
Jackie has
a contract.

At forty-four, Eddie Pelligrino announces that he’s going to be heavyweight champion of the world. His wife Jackie would like him to finish dinner.

She has another reason to object. For twenty-two years, a fictionalized Don King has paid her to keep Eddie married, comfortable, and nowhere near a boxing ring.

Then Eddie actually goes to the gym. The arrangements start to unravel. Suddenly, a household secret is becoming a public spectacle—and the people who love him have rather different ideas about what winning should cost.

You’re Never Gonna Be is an absurdist comedy about boxing, marriage, and the administrative burden of stopping someone you love from following his dream.

An invented, alternate-world satire. Not a true story.

In one corner

A man with
a vision.

Eddie has a family, a day job, and an entrance speech forming in his head. What could possibly be missing?

In the other

A woman with
two calendars.

Jackie has spent years making the impossible look like ordinary married life. Now her husband has found a gym with an address.
